The Tsomgo watershed feeds the forests and supplies water to downstream animals and people, including Gangtok, Sikkim's capital. Trees will reduce flooding risks, enhance groundwater quality and quantity, safeguard farmers' crops, save soil, and rejuvenate the water table.

Red pandas, Himalayan Black Bears, Musk Deer, and migratory birds live in Tsomgo Lake's complex ecology. Trees shelter and feed animals and prevent them from entering human settlements, reducing human-animal conflict. Thus, planted species give animal repellent, feed, livelihood diversification, and biodiversity benefits.

Planting native species will prioritise afforestation in the Tsomgo region, which has few trees. Rhododendron and Silver Fir beautify the scene since they can withstand snow and adapt to climate change. Timber and non-timber forest products will provide local populations with sustainable income.

The plantation project gives rural and tribal people in Sikkim, such as women's self-help groups, jobs. Indigenous communities know their forests best, which is why they are encouraged to take part in plantation activities, like digging pits and taking care of the trees once they have grown up.
